Mike Johnson is a husband, a father, and a constitutional law attorney who has dedicated his life and career to fighting for the fundamental freedoms and traditional values that are still cherished by the people of Louisiana.
The eldest son of a Shreveport firefighter who was critically burned and disabled in the line of duty, Mike learned early on the values of hard work, honor and sacrifice. Today, he is widely respected as a leading defender of our constitutional rights and conservative economic principles, and he believes we grow our economy and create jobs by reducing government and the tax burden on families and businesses. Mike and his wife, Kelly, and their four children live in north Bossier Parish, one of the fastest growing areas in the region.
Mike has close connections throughout the 4th Congressional District, as he was born and raised in Shreveport, lives in Bossier, is a partner in a law firm headquartered in Minden, and has close family, friends, clients and supporters from Union Parish all the way down to St. Landry Parish.
Mike was elected to the Louisiana Legislature without opposition, and has fulfilled his promise to stand strong for his constituents and their rights. He has been named an "MVP for Business" by the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, "Outstanding Family Advocate" by the Louisiana Family Forum, and received an “A” rating from the NRA Political Action Fund. Mike was re-elected, again with no opposition.
In addition to being a legislator, Mike is a nationally recognized constitutional attorney and legal analyst who is a partner in the Kitchens Law Firm, APLC, and chief counsel of the public interest law firm, Freedom Guard. He frequently appears in national media as a spokesman for limited government and constitutional rights. For nearly twenty years, Mike has advised and provided legal counsel to members of Congress, governors, state legislatures, city councils, school boards, law enforcement agencies, and non-profit organizations on various matters, and has been a primary or contributing author on many landmark pieces of legislation.
He has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, and has litigated and won high profile religious liberty and constitutional law cases in state and federal district and appellate courts nationwide, and taught constitutional law seminars and continuing legal education courses around the country. In his area, he has been named a “Top Lawyer” by SB Magazine, and a “Top 40 Under 40” professional.
Mike understands the plight of the small business owner, because he has been one himself, just like his parents and grandparents. Mike earned his Juris Doctorate from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University, and his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Louisiana State University. Mike grew up in Shreveport, where he attended Caddo Middle Magnet and Captain Shreve High School. At every level of his education, he received academic honors and was elected to the top posts of leadership by his peers. Mike and Kelly have been married for 17 years, and have been the recipients of many honors, including the 2001 “Champions for the Faith” award by the Southern Baptist Convention for their work in promoting family values. Kelly, who is from Webster Parish, is a certified teacher who has taught in the Caddo Parish Public School System and elsewhere, and is a popular speaker at women’s conferences and events.
Mike was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 by the largest margin of victory in over 50 years. He serves on the powerful House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Natural Resources.
